An Active Network Solution to the Problem of RSVP Reservation Gaps

چکیده
With the increasing diversity in network applications and traffic types in the Internet, providing end-to-end QoS support to user traffic has been identified as one of the prime solution to provide deterministic service levels within the network. Due to the heterogeneity exhibited by the Internet, a route for a flow requiring QoS guarantees may not be available from source to destination comprising exclusively QoS supporting path segments. Hence the flow must traverse one or more non-QoS segments referred to here as “reservation gaps”. In this paper we study the problem of reservation gaps and present a solution to address the deficiencies caused by these gaps, using an Active Network approach based on the mobile agent paradigm. The solution we propose is scalable to large networks, like the Internet. We demonstrate the advantages of such a solution using simulations which compares operational characteristics of QoS flows when traversing non-managed and actively managed reservation gaps.

RSVP reservation gaps: problems and solutions
High-end networking applications such as ecommerce, multimedia, distributed data analysis and advanced collaborative environments feature demanding end-to-end quality of service (QoS) requirements. Due to the heterogeneity exhibited by the Internet, a route from source to destination for such a flow may not be available which is comprised exclusively of QoS supporting path segments. Hence the f...
متن کاملEnhancing RSVP Scalability
The current resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) design has no reliability mechanism for the delivery of control messages. Instead, RSVP relies on periodic refresh between routers to maintain reservation states. This approach has several problems in a congested network. End systems send PATH and RESV messages to set up RSVP connections. If the first PATH or RESV message from an end system is ac...
متن کاملA Reservation Optimised Advance Resource Reservation Scheme for Deploying RSVP in Mobile Environments
One of the major problems of deploying Resource ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP) in mobile environments is called the advance resource reservation (ARR) problem. Conventional solutions to this problem waste too many network resources and increase the new Quality of Service (QoS) session blocking probability. In this paper, we propose a reservation optimised ARR scheme which constrains the number of ...
متن کاملA solution to the NKR problem in end-to-end bandwidth reservation
With up-coming Quality of Service (QoS) requirements raised by a wide range of communication-intensive, real-time multimedia applications, resource reservation is one of the approaches to satisfy requested QoS. Resource ReSerVation Protocol (RSVP) is a well-known signaling protocol for bandwidth reservation in the Internet. However, the current reservation protocols like RSVP do not present the...
متن کاملRSVP Standards Today and the Path Towards a Generic Messenger
The Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) specified in RFC2205 has evolved from ST-II (RFC1819) to provide end-to-end QoS signaling services for application data streams. Hosts use RSVP to request a specific quality of service (QoS) reservation from the network for particular application flows. RSVP maintains and refreshes reservation states in routers for a requested QoS application flow. By or...
